Rosetti – Roznovanu Palace is an architectural monument built in 18 century in Iasi city. The building hosts today’s city hall headquarters of Iasi. Between 1830 and 1833 it was restored by the known architect Johan Freywald, the one who designed the Metropolitan Cathedral as well.
In its whole, as architecture as well through the interior frescoes and statues which enriched the exterior in 1830, the palace belongs to the neo-classical style, with baroque elements.
Until 1891 when it is sold to the state, the building is the residence of Rosseti – Roznovanu family, the most powerful and influential family in politics in the city at that time. Being one of the most important houses of that time, it hosted various personalities and witnessed many significant historic events.
At the end of the 18 century, at the Palace settles in the Russian general Romanov and later the entire Russian diplomacy, through the Organic Regulation Period (1829-1831). Even more, in 1866, Roznovanu family, sustained by the political forces from Russia, attempts to organize a plot to conquer the seat of Moldova, but the plan fails. A failure was as well the attempt of the former ruler Mihail Sturdza, settled here in 1858 to come back to the power, 10 years after he left the country. Many personalities have been present in the palace in the 19 century such as Carol I, Natia Kescu (which became the Queen of Serbia in 1882), the famous Hariclea Darclee and many more.
At the end of 19 century, Roznovanu Palace was used as a temporary residence of the royal family, a part of the space being used by the local administration. The building played an important role in history in the I World War, between 1916-1918, when it hosted the headquarters of the political ministries which fled from Bucharest. The room which is today the Mayor’s Office, used to be King Ferdinand I office, and in the today’s Meeting Hall in 1918 was a meeting of Romania’s War Council. At the beginning of 20 century, the Palace knows once more the glamor of the former mundane life, but from 1944 it became the City and Party Committee Headquarters and from 1970 the Iasi City Hall Headquarters.
After 1990 through the Great Hall of the Palace walked various political personalities, members of the Royal House, ambassadors and representatives of states from every corner of the world.
